Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – September 16, 2016 –
On the final day of 2016 Paralympic Equestrian Competition, the top riders from all five grades competed for medals in the musical freestyle competition. Rebecca Hart of Wellington, FL, and Margaret Duprey and Cherry Knoll Farm’s Schroeter’s Romani were the sole representatives from the United States to make the cut. In a fiercely contested Grade II division Rebecca and Romani placed 7th with a score of 67.650%. In the grade II Freestyles Natasha Baker of Great Britain took Gold with Cabral earning a score of 77.850% dominating the Grade II division over the 2016 Paralympic Games. In the silver medal position was the Netherland’s Rixt Van Der Horst riding Caraat to a score 76.350%, and after some high level finishes Germany’s Steffen Zeibig won bronze with Feel Good 4 on a score of 74.350%. . The 2016 Paralympic Equestrian Games at the Deodoro Olympic Equestrian Center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, finished on September 16, with Great Britain winning the Team Gold, Germany winning Silver, and the Netherlands earning Bronze.

Hope Hand, President of the United States Para-Equestrian Association and Paralympian, has been onsite in Rio de Janeiro, working with the FEI as a member of the appeals committee. Hand commented, “It was a great crowd for freestyle day. Thank you Rio. It has been a fun and wonderful experience. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people behind the scenes who have dedicated their personal time volunteering to make these Games a great success. A personal thank you to all USA team support and staff that made it all happen. These people are the backbone that make sure our horses and riders stay healthy and sound. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

The United States Para-Equestrian Association (USPEA) includes every recognized equestrian discipline that is practiced by athletes with an eligible physical impairment with a focus on Paralympic Equestrian Sports. . The USPEA is a network of current and past athletes, owners, officials, event organizers, and equestrian enthusiasts. The Association assists athletes to get involved and expand their knowledge and experience in the Disciplines of Para-Equestrian.

USPEA was created to fill a need to assist Para Equestrian disciplines when they came under the governance of the FEI.  While Para Equestrian disciplines were originally segregated, they now are integrated in international sport.  As each individual Para Equestrian discipline develops, it is USPEA’s mission to always serve as an advisory resource with the ultimate goal that the established able-bodied discipline affiliate will integrate within their organization.

In 2010, the USPEA earned its 501 (c)(3) status and became a recognized International affiliate association of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) working together to grow the FEI recognized disciplines by helping to provide press, educational information, symposiums and competition opportunities for athletes with eligible physical impairments.
