Mill Spring, NC – June 21, 2021 – The Tryon International Equestrian Center was the perfect venue for creating the Tokyo Paralympic atmosphere the Para Dressage riders will experience in August. Tryon graciously hosted the Perrigo Tryon Summer Dressage CPEDI3*/CPEDI*/ and National Show for this international event. From June 18-20, FEI Para Dressage athletes made their way down centerline for international ground jury Adrienne Pot (USA) 3*, John Robinson (GBR) 5*, and Sarah Leitch (GBR) 5*. The night schedule under the lights in the Tryon Stadium made for an electric atmosphere. After the first day the Adequan® U.S. Para Dressage Team and individual riders left the ring with top scores. Each of the rider’s scores improved the second day including number one FEI World ranked individual rider and WEG Bronze medalist and Paralympian Roxanne Trunnell and Dolton, owned by Flintwoode Farms LLC and Karin Flint (Grade I). The duo set a team test world record and personal best with a 84.702. She also earned the championship overall rosette for the CPEDI3*. Trunnell set the bar for her fellow U.S. Para Dressage Team members Paralympian Sydney Collier and All in One, owned by Going for Gold LLC and Katie Robicheaux (Grade I); WEG Silver and bronze medalist and Paralympian Rebecca Hart and El Corona Texel, owned by Rowan O’Riley (Grade III); and WEG bronze medalist Kate Shoemaker and Solitaer 40, owned by Kate, Craig, and Deena Shoemaker (Grade IV), who also had super competitive scores and earned the reserve champion overall. On the final day of competition Trunnell would return for her freestyle walking with elasticity of steps, suppleness of the back, and engagement of hindquarters. The pair was rewarded for their excellent test with a 91, 91.5, and 86.067 for a world record score of 89.522. Once the rider’s head home they will have only a couple of weeks before July 5, when they hear what four horse and rider combinations and two alternates are selected to travel to Germany for Training Camp. This will occur before the athletes head to the Tokyo Paralympic Games August 24-September 5, 2021. Chef d’Equipe and USEF Head of Coach Development & Para Dressage Technical Advisor Michel Assouline was proud of each of the riders and was looking forward to Tokyo in two months. He explained, “It’s really exciting to have had multiple world records. Dolton is a horse that keeps our hearts beating really fast earning multiple scores of 10 along the way. I was proud of our other riders including Rebecca Hart and Tex, Kate Shoemaker and Solitaer 40 with their great tests, and Sydney Collier and All in One who brought consistent scores once again. The U.S. is looking fantastic now and we are here because of gracious horse owners with wonderful horses, sponsors like Perrigo and Adequan, and solid coaching. As we head to the selection process for Tokyo there will be lots of elements to put into consideration. We are excited for the U.S. Team as we prepare to head to the Paralympics.” Trunnell left the arena on the final day wearing a large smile. Any spectator could feel the excitement as her record-breaking scores were announced. Trunnell expressed, “I’m over the moon with how this show went. My trainer and I have been working really hard at home to fine tune the movements in the tests so that when I ride each movement they flow together. During our work together we even changed up the entry to my freestyle. I used to halt and have my trainer signal to start the music. With that he would just get walking and have to halt again. This made it difficult to get a nice balanced square halt on the entry so now when I walk by the spot I would normally stop my trainer signals for the music so that I can keep the walking straight into the first halt and nail it. Achieving these high scores and world records means that these slight adjustments are paying off. I would like to thank my parents, my trainer Andrea Woodard, and my friend and horse owner Karin Flint. Feels good to be part of this wonderful team.” Also in Grade I was U.S. team member Sydney Collier and All in One. The pair continued to put down consistent tests earning them a 74.145. Following in the third position was Ignacio Trevino Fuerte of Mexico riding Beatrice De Lavalette’s Delegada X. Collier was proud of where she is before the Tokyo selections. Collier noted, “I was so happy with my tests this weekend. We took everything we’ve been working on at home and made it happen in the show ring. I have really developed so much of the feel this year all thanks to Katie Robicheaux. I am thankful for the opportunity to show off that feeling in the show ring. Our results also come to show that all of the hard work I have been doing with my nutritionists, my sport psychologist, my workouts, and rides have been worth it. I have really enjoyed competing among the best of the best it is incredible. I am grateful to have been a part of this US team. I am also thankful to my sponsor Georgina Bloomberg for All in One and for everyone that helps myself and the other riders in and out of the ring.” In Grade II Beatrice De Lavalette and Clarc scored a71.414 in the team test and a 73.845 in the freestyle. She noted, “This show has gone really well. I am very happy with my rides. My new partnership is going well with Clarc and there are a lot of strengths. I really enjoy his temperament and he is an old soul and super sweet. I had a great weekend in Tryon. It has the best amenities and nice footing for the horses. I also want to thank my whole family, my parents, and Shayna Simon for being there for me and being a supportive coach.” Beatrice De Lavalette put in beautiful tests for Grade II while her U.S. team member Rebecca Hart and both El Corona Texel and Fortune 500 showcased their top scores in Grade III. Hart commented, “It was such an awesome week. I want to give a huge thank you for the amazing volunteers and organizers who have stayed out for long days in the heat, rain, and all of the elements. Without them this entire event wouldn’t happen. This was such a great way to replicate Tokyo. On our last test of the weekend I debuted a new freestyle test. We hit everything we needed to hit and it was a nice feeling to execute what we have been working on. Overall, I will have so many happy memories from our time in Tryon.” In Grade III U.S. rider Charlotte Merle-Smith and her own Guata also earned top scores. Merle-Smith commented, “This weekend has been great. Each day we added more activity and energy. I was also thankful that my coach was able to come this weekend because she is getting to see what is expected at the international level. I am so excited about our partnership of Guata, my trainer, my family, and myself.” The final tests moved on from Grade III to Kate Shoemaker and Solitaer 40 in Grade IV. Shoemaker left the ring commenting, “I have no idea how they are going to score that test but I was unbelievably happy with my horse.” She continued, “After my team test I had the combination of relief to have the team test over and also excitement for having it go so well. As we head to Tokyo it feels really good to put in a great team test since I know they will be looking at that so carefully. I am so happy that the hard work and everything we do on a daily basis is paying off and it’s showing in the arena. When we go back home we will continue to work on Soli’s fitness so we have as much pop in the arena as possible and we will continue to work on the fine details. I want to find every point in the arena and earn it.” Shoemaker added, “Regardless who gets into Tokyo for our USA team it is by far the strongest US team we’ve ever had. The medal chances are very real. I am super excited for the United States.” She concluded, “I want to thank everyone at the Tryon International Equestrian Center. The show management, volunteers, and each person involved had to stay up super late to be here for us. I want to thank the officials and staff, USEF, Perrigo, Adequan, and of course I want to personally thank Alexus Sisley for all of her help grooming and more and my coach Lehua Custer. It’s nice to have a coach so invested in everything we do.” The final Grade of the show was Grade V where USA rider Cynthia Screnci and Sir Chipoli topped Grade V. This has been a fabulous weekend for us. We have increased our scores every day. This horse is a dream and we were meant to be together. With this being our final observation I have been so proud of our team and how they have pulled together as a group. The atmosphere in the barn is supportive and with everyone cheering each other on.” Screnci added, “I want to thank Michel, Laureen, my trainer Jennifer Baumert, my husband, and my daughter Lia. We’ve been doing this together since she was six. When Eragon got injured I was down and my family was so supportive. I also want to thank Lauren Asher from Select Equine International and her father. I appreciate they wanted to support the Para Dressage sport and they made it possible for me to have Sir Chipoli. Once riders head back to their home barns they will have two weeks before four horse and rider combinations and two alternates are selected by July 5, to travel to Germany for Training Camp. This will occur before the athletes head to the Tokyo Paralympic Games August 24-September 5, 2021. Three horse and rider combinations will be chosen for the Adequan® U.S. Para Dressage Team in Tokyo with one rider competing as an individual.
