International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, N.C. Para-Dressage equestrians from the USA, Canada, Mexico, and South Africa brought forward their mounts for the opening day of the 2019 Tryon Fall Dressage CPEDI3* Presented by Adequan® and the USEF Para Equestrian Dressage National Champion Award competition. Riders in Grades I, II, III, IV, and V, competed in the Tryon Stadium Arena in front of ground jury members Kristi Wysocki (USA), Monique Peutz-Vegter (NED), and Katherine Lucheschi (ITA). USA and Canada competed in the team competition with the U.S. Team led by USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage Technical Advisor and Head of Coach Development Michel Assouline including Roxanne Trunell with Dolton; Rebecca Hart with El Corona Texel; Kate Shoemaker with Solitaer 40; and Sydney Collier with All in One. The Team currently leads with finalization of the scores after the Individual Test on Saturday. Earning the top score of the day with a 74.88% was Grade I rider Roxanne Trunnell (USA) and Dolton, owned by Flintwoode Farms LLC.
Trunnell noted, “The Team Test went really well. We are working on squeezing him to get him to walk bigger and it really helped today. I also liked that we were dead accurate on our eight meter circles.” Trunnell has been spending the summer working with Dolton where she resides in Florida.
In Grade II Beatrice De Lavalette (USA) took home the blue with Duna, owned by Beatrice and her parents Elizabeth and Nicolas De Lavalette. “It went really well today I was happy with what I did and how my horse acted,” said De Lavalette. I liked each part of my test today. My horse feels really good and she really pushed herself making it easier for me to move her forward. I am appreciative of my trainer Shayna Simon and of course my parents for all of their help.”

In Grade III Rebecca Hart (USA) and El Corona Texel, owned by Rowan O’Riley, earned the top placing with a 71.226%. Hart expressed, “My test went according to plan today. We wanted to go in and be relaxed. We wanted him to be really put together and keep him in a very happy mind space to build on from here. I was happy that I was able to have what I had in the warmup and maintain it through the archway and present him in the ring.”
Hart spent the last two months in England. She said, “It was really nice to have that opportunity internationally and see some of the judges, riders, and trainers over there.”
One year ago Hart was at Tryon for the 2018 World Equestrian Games. “This is a very special venue for us and I am happy to be here again,” said Hart. “I am incredibly grateful to all the amazing organizers and volunteers that put on the Tryon horse show. I also want to thank everyone that put together the fundraiser for us this week including Sharon Decker, Elma Garcia, and Cindy Boyle. Finally I want to thank my amazing owner and sponsor Rowan O’Riley for providing us the ability to come out here and do this.”

In Grade IV Kate Shoemaker (USA) and her own Solitaire 40 earned a 73.083% with a very accurate and expressive Team Test. Shoemaker stated, “Today I had the best trot I have ever had and I was really proud of Soli. I am hoping we can maintain the trot and take the canter to the next level in the Individual Test. I feel like this is WEG 2.0 since we were here one year ago for the World Equestrian Games. This was my chance for redemption.”
Shoemaker added, “I want to thank everybody from Tryon, US Equestrian, Michel Assouline, Laureen Johnson, and Adequan® for putting on a great event. I also want to thank my personal team that despite me being sick this week they made sure everything got done. My new groom from the United Kingdom Jessica Martin just moved here and jumped right in helping me. I couldn’t have done this without her.”

Canadian rider Lee Garrod and horse Question topped the Grade V Team Test. Garrod stated, “The Team Test went well but I didn’t have as much horse as I usually have. The coach of our team, Clive Milkins, said to go for steady over making mistakes and that’s what I shot for today. My favorite part of the test were my simple changes. I felt like I landed like a leaf. Question’s extended canters were great too. Tomorrow I look forward to having a more expressive horse.”
Garrod was thankful for all of delegates on Team Canada including Clive Milkins. Garrod added, “I am thankful for Clive, my coach back home, and my original trainer who got me into dressage who is working as my groom.”

In the CPEDI1* Para-Dressage Novice Test Grade IV spectators could see that Emma Jameson (USA) and Misha Marshall’s horse Cortesana La were enjoying their very first international dressage show. Jameson explained, “The fact that all of my emotions stayed in until after it was done including crying and laughing was wonderful. I think my test went really well and it was indescribable. One year ago I told my trainer Ashley Parsons I wanted to do Para-Dressage. Without blinking she said go ahead and do it. I had been in therapeutic riding since I was two years of age and then moved to riding hunters and jumpers. Before I started riding I couldn’t walk independently. The horses taught me how to walk. I am so thankful for this journey and especially thankful to Misha Marshall and my entire family for everything they have done for me including driving me to the barn all these years.”
